The dock we are moored at right now is at the most Northerly point of Gibraltar. The next country to the North is Spain. The boarder between Gibraltar and Spain happens to be an airport runway. There is one road that is the checkpoint between the two countries that runs right across the runway. When a plane is coming in for a landing or one is taking off the gates on the road are closed to let the plan pass.
We are parked a few hundred feet from the runway so it makes for a pretty exciting event when a plane lands or takes off. This is a short clip of Charlie relaxing in the cockpit.
There is also a lovely little addition to the whole scenario. Since the runway is surrounded by water there are naturally birds all around. Birds and airplanes don't mix so well. At semi-regular intervals you hear flares with airburst explosions being sent off up and down the runway to discourage the birds from hanging out around the runway. At least I assume that what they are doing...
